Whether located near the front entrance or back garage door, a mudroom is a small, functional space designed to help manage dirt, mud and clutter before entering the main living area of a home. This transitional spot is perfect for removing shoes, coats and bags when entering and grabbing them quickly when leaving. Keeping these multi-functional spaces organized can be a challenge. Often featuring hooks, cubbies, shelves and benches, these hard-working spaces must be equipped with the right storage systems to handle anything quite literally thrown into them.

At Concept II, we’ve seen all types of mudrooms. From small nooks off the front door to large, combined mud and laundry rooms - there is no one-size-fits-all solution for designing a highly functional mudroom that maximizes storage and handles the daily comings and goings. When designing the mudroom that is right for your home, consider a few key tips to make the area both beautiful and functional:

  • Built-In Storage Include built-in cabinetry, cubbies and bins to organize separate spaces for shoes, backpacks and sporting equipment. Coat hooks are ideal for hanging items quickly as you come and go and drawers are perfect for storing small items such as gloves, keys or pet supplies.
  • Open Shelving – Open, adjustable shelving provides space for storing seasonal items, accessories or frequently used items. It also provides a nice, decorative accent to break up a long row of cabinetry and drawers.
  • Dedicated Seating Area  Incorporate a bench or built-in seating space to sit while taking shoes on and off. This is especially useful in homes with children or multiple family members. Often times, the bench will features drawers or open space under it to neatly tuck shoes when not in use.
  • Laundry or Utility Space  If the space is large enough, consider integrating a small laundry station, sink or pet area to keep the mess contained to one spot in the home.
  • Shoe Storage – Many families store most of their shoes in the mudroom. Add shoe racks or cubbies that are tall and deep enough to fit boots and shoes for each family member.
  • Sport & School Gear – Add hooks, cubbies or baskets to hold frequently used supplies for cooler seasons, school and sports. These items can range in variety and having a neat bin or basket to tuck them into will go a long way to keep your space neat and tidy.
